The Revolt of 1857

Nature of the Revolt

The Revolt of 1857 was a major turning point in modern Indian history. It began as a sepoy mutiny in the Bengal Army and quickly transformed into a widespread popular uprising across North and Central India against the British East India Company.

Causes of the Revolt

A. Immediate Cause

  • Enfield Rifle Cartridges: Introduction of the new Enfield Rifle. The paper cartridges had to be bitten off before loading into the rifle.
  • The Rumour: A rumour spread that the cartridges were greased with cow and pig fat, offending both Hindu and Muslim sepoys (cows being sacred to Hindus and pigs forbidden in Islam).

B. Political Causes

  • Doctrine of Lapse: Introduced by Lord Dalhousie, which annexed states lacking a natural male heir. Key annexed territories included Satara (1848), Jaitpur & Sambalpur (1849), Udaipur (1852), Jhansi (1853), and Nagpur (1854).
  • Annexation of Awadh (1856): Annexed on the grounds of “misgovernance” (maladministration) under Lord Dalhousie. This deeply resentment among the Bengal Army sepoys, as a majority of them were recruited from Awadh.
  • Abolition of Regal Titles: Suspension of pensions for local rulers, notably Nana Saheb (adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao II).

C. Socio-Religious Causes

  • Interference with Social Customs: Legislation such as the Abolition of Sati (1829), Abolition of Female Infanticide, and the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act (1856) brought deep anxiety among traditional groups.
  • Religious Disabilities Act (1850): Allowed converts to Christianity to inherit ancestral property, leading to fears of mass forced religious conversions by Christian missionaries.

D. Economic Causes

  • Land Revenue Systems: High tax rates under Permanent Settlement, Ryotwari, and Mahalwari systems led to widespread peasant impoverishment.
  • De-industrialization: British economic policies ruined traditional Indian handicrafts and artisans.

Immediate Outbreak Timeline

  1. February 26, 1857 (Berhampore): 19th Native Infantry refused to use the new cartridges.
  1. March 29, 1857 (Barrackpore): Mangal Pandey of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry (BNI) shot his British officers (Lieutenant Baugh and Major Hewson). He was executed on April 8, 1857.
  1. May 10, 1857 (Meerut): The 20th Native Infantry staged a open revolt, killed British officers, and marched towards Delhi.
  1. May 11–12, 1857 (Delhi): Rebels seized Delhi and proclaimed 82-year-old Bahadur Shah II as Shahenshah-e-Hindustan.

Reasons for Failure

  1. Limited Geographic & Social Base: The revolt did not cover all of India. Large parts of South India, Western India, Bengal, and Punjab remained largely peaceful.
  1. Lack of Centralized Leadership & Unity: The rebels lacked a unified political organization or clear future vision.
  1. Support of Indian Princes to British: Rulers of Gwalior, Hyderabad, Patiala, Rampur, and Nepal supported the British. Lord Canning remarked: “They acted as breakwaters to the storm which otherwise would have swept us away in one wave.”
  1. Superior British Resources: British forces possessed advanced weaponry (like the Enfield Rifle and electric telegraph), organized military structure, and competent generals.

Consequences & Historical Impact

A. Government of India Act, 1858

  • End of Company Rule: Rule of East India Company was abolished; administration directly transferred to the British Crown (Queen Victoria).
  • Secretary of State: Created the office of the Secretary of State for India assisted by a 15-member council.
  • Viceroy of India: Governor-General of India was given the title of Viceroy. Lord Canning became the First Viceroy of India.

B. Queen’s Proclamation (November 1, 1858)

  • Read aloud by Lord Canning at a Grand Durbar held in Allahabad.
  • Promised non-interference in religious affairs and declared an end to territorial annexation policies (Doctrine of Lapse was discarded).

C. Reorganization of the Military

  • Peel Commission: Reorganized the Indian army based on the policy of “Divide and Rule”.
  • Increased ratio of European soldiers to Indian soldiers in the army.
  • Martial vs. Non-Martial races distinction was introduced.
