The Mughal Era

Foundation (1526 – 1556)

  • Foundation: The Mughal Empire was established in India by Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur in 1526 after defeating Ibrahim Lodi in the First Battle of Panipat. Babur introduced gunpowder and artillery effectively in Indian warfare.
  • Battles of Babur:
    • Battle of Panipat (1526): Defeated Ibrahim Lodi.
    • Battle of Khanwa (1527): Defeated Rana Sanga of Mewar.
    • Battle of Chanderi (1528): Defeated Medini Rai.
    • Battle of Ghaghra (1529): Defeated the Afghan chiefs.
  • Humayun (1530–1540 & 1555–1556): Babur’s son and successor. Faced severe challenges from Afghan leader Sher Shah Suri, who defeated Humayun at the Battle of Chausa (1539) and Battle of Kanauj (1542), forcing Humayun into exile. Sher Shah established the Sur Empire (known for administrative reforms, introduction of the silver Rupiya and copper Dam, and building the Grand Trunk Road). Humayun recaptured Delhi in 1555 with Persian help.

Imperial Expansion & Zenith (1556 – 1707)

  • Akbar the Great (1556–1605): Ascended the throne at age 13 under Bairam Khan’s regency.
    • Second Battle of Panipat (1556): Defeated Hemu.
    • Religious & Social Policy: Abolished Jizya (1564) and pilgrimage taxes, founded Din-i Ilahi (1582), and promoted Sulh-i-Kul (peace with all).
    • Land Revenue System: Zabti System or Dahsala System, implemented by his finance minister Raja Todar Mal.
    • Mansabdari System: Introduced to grade civil and military officials and organize the army based on Zat and Sawar ranks.
  • Jahangir (1605–1627): Renowned for his Chain of Justice (Zanjir-i-Adl). His reign saw the peak of Mughal painting. He executed the 5th Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev. His wife, Nur Jahan, wielded immense political influence.
  • Shah Jahan (1628–1658): Known as the “Golden Age of Mughal Architecture”. Built the Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Delhi’s Shalimar Gardens. European travelers like Bernier and Tavernier visited India during his reign.
  • Aurangzeb / Alamgir I (1658–1707): The last of the “Great Mughals”. His reign marked the territorial zenith of the empire but sowed seeds of decline due to prolonged Deccan campaigns, re-imposition of Jizya (1679), and alienation of Rajputs, Sikhs, and Marathas. He was often called Zinda Pir (Living Saint).
